Xanthorrhoea species or Grass Trees are a pretty standard ‘feature plant’ in a native garden, with their showy black trunk and perfect grass head on top they are almost a signature plant for a lot of Australian gardens.
It is mostly their trunk height that people become obsessed with and it is an ‘instant’ WOW factor once planted. However recently I have been noticing how showy they can be without that trunk, just the grass head alone is unlike any other native plant you can have within your garden.
The spheres of the grass head are perfect and if given enough space amongst other things will stand-out and give foliage contrast for years before the trunk develops. So don’t become disenchanted if you can’t afford a grass tree with a trunk, plant a seed grown one instead and enjoy these gorgeous shapes!
