This is a beautiful specimen of Banksia occidentalis, that I saw growing in a private garden in south west Sydney. The colour contrast between the new flower and the mature flowers is striking, it almost looks like two different plants. This was growing on a high mound for extra drainage and the natural soil had been carefully added to. As Banksia occidentalis comes from WA it dislikes the humid summers of the east coast and is therefore an unreliable shrub, however definitely worth a try if you are keen, makes a great screen or feature.

Birdbaths designed for birds

Mallee Birdbaths are specifically designed to serve birds. The copper dishes are broad and shallow, allowing birds to land on the edge and walk into the water. The baths are modern, elegant and durable. They are locally made in the Illawarra (NSW, Australia) using materials that will weather well and last decades. For help on which dish to choose, go here.
